Back-to-School Traffic Safety

Reminders for drivers and pedestrians

As students and teachers return to class, it’s time to brush up on back-to-school traffic safety:

  • When approaching a marked school zone, obey the posted speed limit and watch for children crossing the street.
  • Passing a school bus with a stop arm extended or flashing red or amber lights is illegal. This can result in a citation of at least $250 or up to 30 days in jail, and a 30-day suspension of your driving privileges.
  • Coralville police officers patrol school zones before and after school every day to ensure the safety of our community’s children. Do your part and obey the laws in and around our neighborhood school zones.

Progress Continues on Major Road Reconstruction Projects

1st Avenue

1st Avenue is reduced to one lane in each direction from just south of 6th Street to just south of 9th Street. Reconstruction on the west half of the project should be complete by mid-to-late September, and then work will begin on the east half. The 6th Street connection to 1st Avenue is scheduled to re-open in mid-to-late August.

With the upcoming start of the school year, we are continually monitoring progress to make sure we provide adequate notification to the school district, Durham School Services, and families with students at nearby Central Elementary School.

Coral Ridge Ave improvements

Coral Ridge Avenue

It’s another sign of progress on the Coral Ridge Avenue reconstruction project: traffic on Coral Ridge Avenue is scheduled to move onto the new pavement between Forevergreen Road and Wheaton Road in mid-August. The Coral Ridge Avenue detour remains the same and uses Oakdale Boulevard, Crosspark Road, and Wheaton Road. Traffic will detour until mid-November.
