Major Road Reconstruction Continues

Allow extra travel time on 1st Avenue & Coral Ridge Avenue

Road construction continues on 1st Avenue (from 6th Street to 9th Street) and Coral Ridge Avenue (from Oakdale Boulevard to Forevergreen Road). Drive safely, be patient, and remember: we’re making progress on these projects. Learn about these projects at

Finishing 1st

1st Avenue

The next phase of 1st Avenue construction has begun. 1st Avenue traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction near the 6th Street intersection, and both lanes shift east onto temporary pavement. 6th Street is closed from 1st Avenue to the Baymont Inn & Suites driveway. Coralville Transit may experience delays, with reroutes for a few stops on 6th Street near 1st Avenue. 1st Avenue improvements

Coral Ridge Avenue improvements

Coral Ridge Avenue

Drivers, take note: starting in mid-May, Coral Ridge Avenue traffic will detour using Oakdale Boulevard, Crosspark Road, and Wheaton Road. The temporary closure will speed up the project timeline, giving the contractor full access to this section of roadway. Coral Ridge Avenue improvements

Take turns

Get Used to the “Zipper Merge”

Efficient merging means less wait for everyone

Look for signs along 1st Avenue and Coral Ridge Avenue construction areas reminding drivers to use both lanes up to the lane taper, and to take turns merging “zipper style” where the two lanes taper into one lane.
The zipper merge isn’t rude: it is important for drivers to use during these projects to reduce backups, keep both lanes moving at similar speeds, and get everyone to where they're trying to go. Zipper merge video
