Proposed Changes to Coralville Transit Fares & Passes to Bring Consistency for Area Transit Systems

Coralville Transit Bus

The City of Coralville will hold a public hearing on proposed changes to Coralville Transit fares and passes at the Coralville City Council meeting on May 25, 2021 at 6:30 pm. If approved, the changes would take effect on July 6, 2021. The proposed changes would allow fares and passes to be consistent between Coralville Transit and Iowa City Transit, and would better coordinate service between the area transit systems.

No rate increases to Coralville Transit are proposed. The proposed change includes a new reduced youth fare for riders age 5-18 years old, and three new types of passes for Coralville Transit. The adult fare would remain the same.

Proposed Coralville Transit fares and passes:

  • Adult Cash Fare:                          $1.00
  • Youth Cash Fare (Ages 5-18):     $0.50 (current fare is $0.75 for ages 5-15 on nights and weekends)
  • Children under the age of 5:        No Fare
  • Senior (65+) Card Holders:          No Fare
  • Disabled Card Holders:                No Fare
  • ADA Paratransit Card Holders:    No Fare
  • Medicare Card Holders:               No Fare (change in fare)
  • 24 Hour Pass:                              $2.00 (new pass)
  • Single Ride Tickets:                     $1.00
  • 10 Ride Pass:                               $8.50 (new pass)
  • 20 Ride Pass:                               Discontinued
  • Adult 31-Day Pass:                      $32.00
  • Youth 31-day Pass (Ages 5-18):  $16.00 (new pass)

The proposed changes are a result of the Iowa City Area Transit Study that started in August of 2019. The transit study included a review of all routes, stops, schedules, fares, and transfer policies, and included public input to improve and better coordinate service between the area transit systems. Based on the study, Coralville Transit implemented new routes and schedules in October of 2020.

The study looked for opportunities for a consistent fare policy, pricing, and improved coordination between transit systems. Recommendations resulting from the study included simplifying the pricing for fares and passes to be consistent between Coralville Transit and Iowa City Transit.
