Voters in Coralville will select a new City Council member on Tuesday, September 29, 2020, following the resignation of long-time City Councilor Tom Gill. The successful candidate will take office on Wednesday, September 30, and complete the remainder of the term, which ends December 31, 2021.

Coralville has five City Council members who serve overlapping four-year terms. This at-large, non-partisan position is elected by Coralville citizens.

Candidate Filing Information
The City of Coralville’s nomination process is by petition, with only one election. Candidates are required to have a minimum of 25 signatures of registered voters residing in Coralville on their petitions.

Candidates may begin collecting signatures at any time. Nomination papers must include the Affidavit of Candidacy and the Nomination Petition. Nomination papers must be submitted in person to the Johnson County Auditor’s Office by Friday, September 4, at 5:00 pm. The Auditor’s Office is currently open by appointment only. To make an appointment to deliver nomination papers, call 319.356.6004 or email elections@johnsoncountyiowa.gov.

About the Candidates

Special Election: Where & When to Vote
Elections are managed by the Johnson County Auditor’s Office. Polls will be open from 7:00 am until 8:00 pm on September 29, 2020.

  • September 14-28, 2020: In person early voting at Auditor’s Office, 913 S. Dubuque St. Suite 101, Iowa City, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm weekdays. Please check in with front door staff.  
  • September 18, 2020: Pre-registration deadline and deadline to request mailed absentee ballot, 5:00 pm for both.    
    • Voters may still register after this date using the Election Day Registration procedure.   
    • In-person early voting at the Auditor’s Office 913 S. Dubuque St. Suite 101, Iowa City, will still be available after this date.
  • September 28, 2020: Last day for in-person early voting at the Auditor’s Office, 913 S. Dubuque St. Suite 101, Iowa City,
       8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Postmark deadline to return absentee ballots by mail.
  • September 29, 2020: Election day. Polls open 7:00 am-8:00 pm.
