Coralville Mayor John A. Lundell has issued the following statement in response to recent Black Lives Matter comments:
The City of Coralville is continuing the process of conducting a comprehensive review of racial inequities in our community. This review is being led by the Mayor and City Council in conjunction with city administrative and departmental staff. Persons of color from the local community have been an important part of this discussion.
During an update of this review at the July 14th City Council meeting, inappropriate statements were made by City Councilor Tom Gill. His comments were offensive to me and the other members of the City Council. They in no way reflect the beliefs or values of the Council, me, or our staff.
I have heard from many community members who also found Mr. Gill’s comments very troubling and not reflective of the feelings of the majority of the Coralville community. As always, I appreciate hearing from community members and encourage them to continue reaching out with their questions or concerns.
While Mr. Gill’s comments temporarily interrupted the progress in conducting our review, the City Council and I are committed to this review and resulting improvements related to racial inequities within our city.
