City of Coralville Blood Drive

Friday, March 24, 2017

Be a hero without a badge. Donate blood! The University of Iowa DeGowin Blood Center and the Coralville Police Department have teamed up for a blood drive.

Why Donate Blood?
  • Every two seconds someone needs blood.
  • Approximately 400 blood products are transfused at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics every week.
  • 1 unit can save up to 3 lives.
  • All blood donations collected by DeGowin are used locally to help patients at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Approximately 24,000 blood products are transfused each year. Finding donors remains one of the most urgent needs to help treat patients and every day UIHC must give blood products to patients as a life-saving force. It is only through the help of donors like you who believe in giving back that the DeGowin Blood Center is able to carry out its mission.
Appointments encouraged, walk-ins welcome.

It is important to be well hydrated and it is recommended to increase the amount of salt in your diet the day prior to donating.

General Blood Donor Requirements
  • Be at least 16 years of age (anyone 16 years old need a consent form signed by parents/guardians prior to donating)
  • Eat a full meal within 4 hours of donation.
  • Be in general good health (cold & flu symptom-fee for 5 days)
  • Drink plenty of fluids before donating
  • Weigh at least 110 lbs.
  • Bring a list of current medications
  • Bring a list of places visited outside of the U.S. in the past 3 years
  • Getting a flu shot is NOT a deferral
