Retirement Reception for Kevin Callahan & Jim Kessler
Tuesday, December 17, 2019
The City of Coralville will host a reception to honor Coralville Water Plant Superintendent Kevin Callahan and Building and Zoning Official Jim Kessler, who will each retire on December 31, 2019.
Callahan has served as Superintendent since January 5, 1987. He
worked in municipal water systems in Grinnell and Waterloo before working as a water plant operator and water plant mechanic at the University of Iowa for eight years. During his tenure in Coralville, he has overseen the construction of two new water towers, six new wells, three major water plant expansions, and relocation of department offices and lab to a new facility.
Jim Kessler was hired by the City of Coralville
as a Building Inspector on April 15, 1991, and was later promoted to Building and Zoning Official. Prior to being hired by the City of Coralville, he
worked as a master electrician and journeyman, electrical contractor, and maintenance and construction supervisor in the Iowa City area. As an electrician, he wired the Iowa City Pedestrian Plaza and Fountain, Lemme and Shimek schools, the Iowa City and Coralville Kmarts, and other notable projects. Kessler has overseen the development of a rental inspection program, application and enforcement of the Town Center District plan, and plan review and inspections for Coral Ridge Mall and the Iowa River Landing, including the Coralville Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. Kessler was also involved in the development of the 2014 Coralville Community Plan. During Kessler’s tenure, permit valuations increased from $19.5 million to $153.3 million annually.
