Brownfields
What are Brownfields?
The Coralville Brownfields Program works to assess, clean up, and facilitate the redevelopment and/or reuse of potentially contaminated properties known as brownfields within Coralville.

Brownfields are considered real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.

Brownfield Testing
It takes information to identify if a property is a brownfield or not. Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) are performed in two phases to examine brownfield properties for potential contamination.

Phase I ESAs take a preliminary look at possible brownfields properties, involving records research and on-site visual observations. Phase II ESAs include sampling of the soil and water at a property to identify the types, concentrations, and areas of potential contamination. If samples are found to have higher than acceptable contamination levels, cleanup of the site may be necessary.
