Throw away big, broken items

Mayor's Clean Up Week in Coralville offers free garbage pickup up of large items that are no longer usable and won't fit in your trash cart (such as broken furniture or bathroom fixtures) from October 1-5, 2018.

Place items curbside up to 24 hours before or by 7:00 am on your regular trash collection day. If any items are not picked up, remove them from the curb within 24 hours after collection day. Metal is picked up by a separate truck to be recycled, and may be picked up on a day other than your regular collection day.

This free event is available to all Coralville residences eligible for trash and recycling services.  As usual, tag extra bags of garbage, and put yard waste in biodegradable Coralville yard waste bags or a 33-gallon container with an annual yard waste sticker. Note that appliances, construction materials, electronics, or hazardous materials are not accepted. For more information, please call 319.248.1740.

Remember to Recycle Cardboard

Because of high volumes of materials collected during Mayor’s Clean Up Week, consider setting out large amounts of cardboard the week following Mayor’s Clean Up Week, or take it any time to the Coralville Drop-Off Recycling Center at 950 Hughes Street or any drop-off location in Johnson County. Corrugated cardboard has been banned from the Iowa City Landfill and must be recycled. Cardboard must be flattened for recycling.  Learn about cardboard recycling

What to do with usable items

To get rid of furniture or building and housing materials that are still usable, consider donating them to ReStore, rather than sending them to the landfill.

Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity ReStore (2401 Scott Boulevard SE in Iowa City) accepts shelving, working appliances, building and plumbing supplies, quality furniture, hardware, tools, cabinets, lighting, doors, windows, tile, flooring, and more. ReStore sells the items to be reused, and the proceeds support Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity; donations are tax-deductible. Items should be in reusable, resellable condition.

Donations are accepted Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Free pickup is available. To schedule a pickup or learn more, visit www.iowacityrestore.com or call 319.338.5687.
