Using consumer fireworks still banned in Coralville; City ordinance regulates sale of consumer fireworks
State lawmakers legalized the sale and use of consumer fireworks from June 1 through July 8, and December 10 through January 3. However, use of consumer fireworks is not allowed in the City of Coralville. As in the past, under city ordinance, it is illegal to use any fireworks in Coralville, with the exception of fireworks displays handled by insured operators and approved by City authorities.
Violators face a minimum fine of $250 and can be held liable for any damages they cause.
Novelty fireworks (sparklers, snakes, or snaps) remain legal.
Buying or Selling Fireworks
City ordinance 2017-1008 regulates the sale of consumer fireworks within Coralville as allowed by state law. Businesses or community groups must meet specific requirements and have a permit from the Coralville Fire Department to sell fireworks in Coralville.
If you purchase fireworks, please be aware they cannot be used in the City of Coralville, and many surrounding communities also prohibit their use. Fireworks must be stored safely and securely according to the manufacturer’s instructions and guidelines from the National Fire Protection Agency.
